While ear wax may not look attractive, it’s your body’s natural defence mechanism to lubricate your ear canal and to keep harmful debris and bacteria out of the ear. Usually, this isn’t a problem as ear wax should fall out on its own, but sometimes it needs a helping hand. If you experience any earache, difficulty hearing or a feeling of fullness in your ear, you may have a buildup of wax in the ear canal. At Redmayne Lodge our highly skilled nurses uses ear irrigation which is also known as Ear Syringing Ear irrigation, is a routine procedure to remove excess ear wax or foreign objects (food or insects) from the ear. This painless technique is often used to remove wet or very soft wax that has collected on the eardrum. • What Happens During an Ear Syringing Procedure? before we proceed with any ear syringing procedure, we will look inside your ear to ensure your symptoms are caused by excess wax buildup or foreign materials and not something more serious. • Once confirmed, the procedure can go ahead at our clinic. Using an electric pump with the correct water pressure, warm water is gently squirted into your ear canal to flush the ear wax out. This procedure loosens the softened wax, which then falls out with the water. Don’t worry — you won’t see a thing! Once the earwax is gone, any symptoms will usually improve over a day or two. • Once your ear syringing procedure is complete, we’ll provide you with professional advice on how to avoid a further buildup of ear wax, and safely care for your ears in the future. What Are the Risks of an Ear Syringing Procedure? • Ear syringing is a safe procedure, but we recommend it for the removal of soft ear wax only. If the ear wax is hard, there is a risk of perforating the eardrum. In this instance, we will recommend another ear wax removal method, such as ear instrumentation, which uses specially designed tools to remove wax manually. • Ear syringing is also inadvisable if you have previously had complications following this procedure. We will also advise against this method of ear wax removal if you have had ear surgery in the past, if you currently have an ear infection or if you have a burst eardrum. • Some patients may feel dizzy after ear syringing, but this quickly settles. Occasionally, inflammation can develop in the ear canal following an ear syringing procedure, causing some itching and discomfort, but this can be easily treated with ear drops.
